Hi
Good morning, I hope you're doing well this fine Friday Morning!
Motivation is like a muscle. I think it’s something that needs to be exercised, used and cultivated over time. Motivation really only lasts for a bit of time. Motivation is at
its highest peak when we start something new. For example, a new workout program or meeting a personal trainer. Eventually, enthusiasm wanes and we are looking for every excuse in the book of why not to go.
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily." Zig Ziglar It doesn’t last, but, like I said we have to exercise it. It comes and goes, some days your motivation is high, some days it’s low, and other days it’s non existing. Well, why? #BecauseHuman and we are not perfect!
We have to put in the effort on the regs to the keep the motivation up. You may not
be motivated to do a particular thing, but maybe you are for something else.
Motivation doesn’t just always happen, nor does it always feel natural, especially when it pertains to fitness. It can be really hard to start a fitness regimen, especially if it’s not something you enjoy doing.
So, how do we exercise motivation? I think it begins with habits. Forming habits over time. Beginning small, having small wins, and then manifesting those small habits or goals into big results. We have to get clear about our “Why” as well and keep it front and center! Motivation or will power isn’t something that we have an infinite supply of. I wish we did.
Habits – help you reach your goals when the motivation isn’t there. Secondly, making a plan that that you can stick to when you just don’t feel like it, but also giving yourself the flexibility to deviate if it’s just not in cards for you that day.
Most of the time motivation, or lack
thereof, comes from doing things because of external motivators. For example, someone told you to, or the famous you “should do this”.
So, you do some of the “Should” things, but you fall off really quick because it’s really not what you want to do in the first place.
How many times have you “should”
all over yourself? It worked for a moment but you became bitter about doing (xyz). Instead of “shoulding”, how about “I want to” or I chose to”? Don’t fall victim to doing something purely out of external motivation.
Like I said before, external factors may get you going at first but think about what's gonna keep you going for the long haul! #sustainability
Find internal motivation – a reason within yourself, and then start building habits towards that behavior.
Motivation is a feeling that ebbs and flows – habits will keep you going when the motivation just isn’t there.
Habits only take about a month to build, so if you keep at it, you’ll be there in no time. And while your building the habits, give yourself credit for the little wins. In the long run, that’s what
counts. My favorite Fitness Reads of the week:
Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I hope you have a wonderful relaxing weekend.
