Not being able to eat what you enjoy is no way to live. Food is more than fuel. It’s fuel, yes, but it should also be enjoyable, delicious, satisfying, and nourishing. No food should be banned unless you have an allergy.
Last week, I talked about not ever being on diet or going on one. This is extremely rare, because most people have. I guess there's a few people out there that haven’t been on a diet. I, myself, am not one of them.
I sure can remember when I was on diet, with a short list of foods that I could have. Wanted pizza, but I couldn't because bread was deemed evil. Pizza is one of my favorite foods. Couldn’t have
fruit or milk either. You know when you ban foods, what happens? You want it that much more. Then you binge on it, followed by a butt load of guilt. You then promise yourself you will do good starting Monday, and the cycle continues.
Oh, the horror of it all! How many times have you banned food and wanted it even more?
We think diets are the answer to all our problems. Diets
actually perpetuate the weight loss problem more.
The more we diet, the fatter we get.
I know, I know, it's cray cray. The experts insist that you will lose 10 pounds in 20 days. You see the
before and after pictures, and believe this is finally it. It's really not, because you haven't put in the mindset work, or learned how to keep the weight off, and maintain the weight lost. You do lose it, that’s not the problem – the problem is that you gain it back and your 20 lbs heavier than when you started. :(
Back to not being able to eat something because of a particular diet. I always seem to end up in weight loss
conversations. I suppose now, I am kind of used to it. Sometimes, I try not to let on that I am a fitness professional, especially when the topic of weight loss comes up, because I am anti diet and I believe that moderation and balance is key to forever fat loss and food freedom.
Most folks don’t believe in Moderation, and they are not willing to try something different for whatever reason, mainly because they are scared to give up the
diet mentality. That's all they know, and that it worked at one point in time, therefore it will work again.
Anyways, well the conversation went in the direction that the girl was on diet, which was the Paleo Diet. She was trying to figure out how she could have Pizza. I mostly listened and nodded my head. I felt sad for her because she really wanted pizza - real pizza not Franken pizza. She also claimed during the conversation that
she was doing Paleo to see what foods were causing her skin to breakout, but in the same breath she told me how much weight she lost in a week. A little red flagish to me, but that’s neither here and there.
Okay, so I get folks that are gluten sensitive or have celiac disease (which is very small percent of people in the world), but to just outright ban foods for the sole sake of fat loss is nonsense in my opinion. Others may think
not. If you’re fantasizing and trying to figure out how to have "said food" then the diet will not be sustainable.
So, you can't eat nothing! How long do you think you can keep this up? It won't be very long. Sure, will power and motivation will be strong in the beginning, but we don't have an infinite supply. The foods that are off limits will be calling your name.
Long
story short, stay away from the diets. Create a "diet" that is sustainable and will work for life. If that is Paleo, then so be it, but it should be effortless, maintainable, and sustainable for your life. Your "diet" should enhance your life, not hinder it.
I created a “how to eat without counting calories” cheat sheet/guide that I would like to share with you. You may or may not have seen it circulating on my Facebook page. I've
attached it to this email. You can use it to jump start your fat/weight loss or you can even it use to take a break from macro counting. It’s simple, effortless, and sustainable.
Have a wonderful weekend!
