Deadlifts are awesome! Don't Cha think?

Good morning

To do or not to do Deadlifts. I say Do!

After the first time, I promise you will be in love!

Do you deadlift? If so, what's your favorite style?  If not what's keeping you from lifting the things?

     
I love the deadlift. All variations are fun,
and if you don't jive with one, there are plenty to choose from.
 
There's just something about picking up a heavy weight off the floor. I can't quite put my finger on it. But one thing is for sure; it is so empowering.

Before we move on, let me explain the deadlift.

The deadlift is simply moving the weight from a dead position from the floor.

The cool thing about the deadlift is that you can do it alone. You don't need a spotter. Just walk into the gym, warm up of course, and throw your weight on the bar and get at it. However, if you do need help learning the deadlift or need your form critiqued, I would hire a professional to teach you.

Deadlifts aren't dangerous, nor will they hurt you unless you have bad form. You can get hurt walking, but do we not do it? No. Doing them wrong or incorrectly is where an injury may happen, like not keeping your spine neutral (keeping your back flat). When done right you are gonna get a great workout. Not only a good workout but you will get strong and train your whole body. More specifically our backside - the muscles we often forget about.

Think about the last time you trained your hamstrings or back. It's easy to forget and train the muscles in the front because we see them more. The back of our bodies is just as important, if not more important than the front. If your posterior chain (the entire backside of your body) is weak, then you will run into a whole host of aches and pains. Lower back pain ring a bell?

Ask me what to do for your arms or your legs? Deadlift, that's my answer and some other compound movements. Hehee :D

I always aim to teach all my clients to do some form of the deadlift. First, starting with learning how to hip hinge correctly.  If you haven't learned the hip hinge movement - here's a great place to start ==> learn to hip hinge.


Why the deadlift?

It's a total body movement. It will hit every muscle in the body:

* Back
* Legs
* Core
* Forearms
* Glutes
* Shoulders/Traps

The deadlift is as functional as it comes. Meaning it translates to everyday life, it's primal. We do it every day, even if we don't realize it.

Lift your grocery bags off the floor? Pick your kids up? Moving or lifting your furniture - it's basically a deadlift. 

Not just picking up things, but vacuuming, shoveling snow, gardening. Name any daily activity, and I bet you the deadlift will help you.

Ever hurt your back picking up something? Chances are you were bending down wrong. There is a solution to that. Get stronger, train your core, learn to pick up stuff correctly and deadlift of course.

Not only will you be physically fit from incorporating the deadlift but your physique will respond in more ways than one.

As you have heard me say many times before, the bulk of your training should incorporate compound movements such as deadlifts, squats, rows, chin-ups, push-ups, etc. These moves give you the best bang for your buck. Even when you're doing them with body weight.

So, go on and learn or do the deadlift more. I sometimes do 1-3 variations a week.
