Please don't do another do another quick fix for the New Year

Published: Fri, 12/30/16

Good morning

We’re two days out from the New Year. I can remember scarfing down all the food at this point because I didn't know when I would get it again, as I was going on a diet starting Jan. 1st.

Sound familiar? Too many times to count. Women tell me this all the time too. My response is always the same. Do not diet in the traditional sense, don't lose it too fast because it will come back fast, plus some.

My hope for you today as you’re reading the email is that I change your mind and change your course away from diets. That you realize that there is a better way, a sustainable solution.

All diets start on Monday or January 1st - New Year, New You. I’m sure you’re already seeing all the New Years, New You diet plans staring you in the face. It’s hard not to look and be curious. I’ve been there. This one will work this time.

But…. it doesn’t. You start off with your game face on. You will rock it for the first couple weeks. Things are going well, then this one day - you know that one day where your stomach is growling, but you just ate. Or you are triggered by a commercial with food that you enjoy or you come across something in the pantry that was deemed off limits.

Boom, that’s it. Lights out! Just a taste, then you eat the whole thing. You feel guilty, you feel bad, and vow to go harder next time. And you do, till it happens again and again.

What gives?!

The body is fighting back. Feast or famine. The body is gonna feast before it starves, it’s designed to do so.

Diets are alluring, they're designed for you to fail, so the weight loss industry can keep you coming back for more. Yes, you will lose some weight, but it always comes back, and the next shiny new diet will be waiting in the shadows.

Don’t do it!

So how do you lose the weight/fat and keep it off forever?

You don’t diet.
You don’t ban foods
Just say NO!

You don’t do any extreme things to lose weight.
You don’t run yourself into the ground with butt loads of cardio.

You do focus on daily habits.
Do make small changes.

Do eat well, whole foods 80% of the time.
Eat all the foods that you love, even the ones that the weight loss industry deems unhealthy- just eat less of them. Can you imagine a life without pizza or whatever food is your favorite?

Do #LiftTheThings and do lift heavy. Those 5 lbs will eventually be to light. I’m sorry ladies, but you can’t change the body with 5 lb dumbbells. I’m glad you have some weights, but you will eventually need heavier ones. Strength is relative to each person. So what is heavy for one might not be heavy for another, and vice versa.

To see some real change in your physique, squat, deadlift, lunge, push/pull, core training (not crunches or sit ups).

Do train at least three times a week.

Do meet yourself right where you are.

Do get better sleep.

Do some cardio but don’t abuse it.

Lastly, get your mind right, and your physique will follow. We can not beat or shame our bodies into losing weight or dropping the fat.

Time, patience, and consistency is the name of the game. There are no secrets or skipping the important steps to get where you want to be.

As you head into the New Year, be mindful how you set up Resolutions, if you do set them. Heck, where does the time go?

If your resolution is one related to getting fit and healthy for the New Year, please make sure your approach is Sane, Simple, and Sustainable. Don’t go all in, change one small thing at a time. Remember these small changes build like a snow ball.

Do what works for you and something you can see doing for the long haul.

Just my friendly public service announcement for the day.

Happy almost New Year ! Hope you enjoy the last couple days of the year.

Yours in Strength,
Xo
