I know, I know that the detox ads that we see in the media, Facebook, Instagram lead us to believe that we do.
Why is that? It's because detoxes appeal to most of us because we think we are bad for eating the so-called "bad" foods. Also, because
we tend to attach morality to foods. And we always want to believe in that magic cure, the next thing that’s gonna actually work this time….
I'm good if I eat my dry chicken breast and a side of broccoli - nothing inherently wrong with this. I actually eat this type of meal because I enjoy it - not dry, though, lol! And the rest of the statement is - "I'm bad if I eat a couple of cookies or I am bad if I don't eat 5 - 6
times a day."
Wrong on all fronts, IMO. Neither statement is true. Part of the equation is having a healthy relationship with all foods.
So we see these commercials or Insta trainers touting their teas and what not, seemly right after we overate or something. They promise us that we can kick our addictive sugar habits if we follow their 7
or 14-day detox. Drop 10 lbs in 10 days and have a flat tummy.
Before we know it, we are signing up for their program and buying all the ridiculous overpriced supplements.
Only to start the detox, feel like death, and pooping our guts out.
All of that for
what?
My second stab at a detox was a 5 day cleanse. This time, I really knew better. The marketing and the claims coerced me in, though. Same outcomes as the last time. Some weight loss, but it was just water weight. I had a headaches, stomach cramps, and I couldn't stop thinking about foods.
I remember right after the cleanse, I went to
straight to Mellow Mushroom and devoured a whole pizza with my husband, along with some other goodies.
I have never touched or even thought of another detox again.
They are all scams. Even if they say, they are researched and peer reviewed. When looking at the research, make sure that the research is conducted by an outside source, not one that
is associated with the company. Because it will be biased!
So, what to actually do when you do feel bloated, yucky, or what have you. We all have our moments, we all overeat, etc. We are human, and nobody is perfect. What is perfect- it doesn't exist.
First, save your coins and call BS on the diet detox scams and
cleanses.
Second, give yourself some Grace. What's done is done. Move on and let it go. You overate - okay, sooo, move on. My favorite saying is, "Did you die, though." Lol! It happens.
Third -
** Go back to how you eat
regularly.
** Go for walk.
** Get your training on - sweat a bit
** Drink water, so that you can flush the excess sodium and bloat away.
** Eat more veggies than you normally would.
** Just relax and let go of the anxiety, the guilt, and the
berating!
Remember, you are always one meal, one workout, or whatever from getting right back in your power. No diets, detoxes, or cleanses necessary.
