Happy Fri-yay!
It's time for the weekly STRONG Women round-up! I hope this email finds you well.
But first, I want to talk about age. I had a lovely conversation the other day with a woman that was working in the dressing room at Marshalls. As I'm sure you guessed it, it was about fitness and health.
She acknowledged how fit I was and admired it. I said well, you can be fit and healthy too. She said, oh no, I'm too old. She proceeded to tell me about her fitness clothes, mat, tennis shoes, etc that they are just collecting dust.
We carried on with the conversation, I gave her some guidance, but she was still convinced that she was too old. Of course, I said hogwash, no you're not. You are never too old, even if you don't care about aesthetics.
Your quality of life is just as important, if not more important. I believe she was in her 60's. She did also say she was lazy. I beg to differ. That's a story that she is allowing to hold her back.
It makes me so sad to hear women of older age, even younger ones as well, say that they can't because of xyz or their age. I know you don't want to be broken down, feeble, and unable to care for yourself in your 60's, 70's, or 80's!
Independence! Right?! Strength! Be able to catch yourself when you fall, carry your groceries, and have strong bones, just to name a few things!
Age is a number that does not define you.
There may be many issues that convince older people that working out isn’t for them. It may be the comparison trap, a lack of confidence, or the feeling that you need do “all the things” and give up “all the things” that you enjoy to get any results.
Remember this - we all start somewhere, and comparison is the thief of joy. You'll get better by doing and taking action on that 1 thing, then moving on to the next. That's how the progress happens, and the confidence is built.
You are not too old to get started. You're not lazy if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated. You are not doomed. You just have to start and find something that you enjoy doing.
And since this is the weekly round-up series, check out these Bad Mama Jama's kicking ass and taking names. I can only hope that I’m at that level of fitness when I’m their ages!
