Let me tell you a lil quick story, lol, I'll do my best to keep it short. Ya know I can be long-winded. I love to talk!
You see, I used to train with no carbs – specifically, no starch.
So no rice, no potatoes, no fruit - well grapefruit every now and then, no bread. No, no, no, lol!
Thinking back on it, I can't believe I used to do it. Craziness and youthfulness must have been on my side. My energy and performance overall were not where they should have been if I were eating properly.
I was always hungry - never feeling satisfied, eating 5-7 small meals a day, watching the clock like a hawk for when I could eat again. My mood was whacked out, I was edgy all the time. I would go to bed hungry because I had eaten all my "allowed" food for the day.
I was always cold too! You know why? One, my body fat had gotten too low, and being too low carb can also affect your thyroid function. When your thyroid is too low, our bodies have a hard time regulating our body temperature.
Long story short, we need adequate calories to keep our bodies at the proper temperature - calories produce body heat!
Those were just a few of the side effects that I experienced when I banned carbohydrates from my diet.
Anywhoodle...
Here are a few reasons that I wanted to tackle on why you should be eating carbs:
1️. Your performance in the gym is suckin big time! Carbs are the bodies preferred fuel source, my STRONG friend. It's the way our bodies were designed.
You won’t be hitting any PR’s or getting STRONG AF with no carbs, sorry, not sorry, it ain’t happening!
2️. Your cravings are through the roof. You’re hungry ALL the time! Restriction and having cravings go hand and hand. Craving something my friend? Look at what you have cut out of your diet, what you have restricted, or how low have you taken your calories.
The information is there to see. You'll just to have take an objective look at your nutrition and to see how it's affecting your day to day, along with your hunger, energy, and cravings.
3️. You’re getting bad headaches every day! Again, the brain needs glucose, and if you have dropped your carbs too low, consistent headaches will be coming your way.
Just the other day, I felt myself getting a headache, which is usually doesn’t happen when it comes to my nutrition.
Low and behold, it was because I hadn't eaten enough - I was busy and had forgotten to eat. I evaluated what I had eaten so far, and boom, the info was there. I went too long without eating and only had one serving of carbs at that time of day.
4️. You have no energy to do anything! You can barely pull yourself to the gym, let alone play with the kids, walk your dog, etc.
Wondering why you can't train properly or push yourself in the gym? Not making progress? Look at how you’re eating. Trying to eat too little and have an active, fit, vibrant lifestyle just won't happen if you don't eat enough.
Quite frankly you won't feel like doing anything. Who would? I know I didn't.
5️. You’re foggy and can’t think straight! You left the keys in the ignition the other day!
I couldn't think straight. Again, your brain needs carbs for energy. My mental energy was just gone. Don't let me get started on my mood!
So, these are just a fraction of the consequences that happen when we cut carbs out of our diets or take them too low.
My STRONG friend, I caution you on banning food groups.
That's all for now!
